Practitioner Cohorts

What are Practitioner Cohorts ?

In ancient times, spiritual practitioners lived with their teachers.

This proximity provided a rich and engaging environment for deeper openings, essential transmissions, pith teachings and specific cues to refine and augment one’s view and approach to the path and practice.

In modern times, it has become much more difficult to live near our teacher. We intermittently join for retreats whenever we can, but the time spent on our own outside of formal retreats can give way to challenges, especially in the early phases of the path. We often lose our inspiration, discipline and/or clarity of view when away from the teacher-student environment– which ends up impeding our overall momentum towards actualization and mastery of the path.

This is why we created the TMY Online Practitioner Cohorts. By meeting regularly online, these cohorts will serve as a way to maintain continuity of contact between the teacher and students to provide supplemental guidance and continuity.

Cohorts meet for 1-2 hours, 8+ times per year:

Learn deeper knowledge that isn't covered in retreats

It is not possible to receive the full knowledge of any area of spiritual study by merely attending occasional teachings or retreats. To receive the full transmission of your path, more regular contact time with the teacher is needed. Dharma Bodhi has stated that the main ingredient missing in the life of the modern practitioner is an adequate amount of contact time with the teacher. In his years of intensive training, Dharma Bodhi traveled extensively in search of contact with the masters of the authentic Mahāsiddha traditions, and his life was often strained or uprooted over and over again in the process. Not to mention, he lost many work and family opportunities in the effort to maintain contact with his masters.

He knows all too well the struggle it can take to get to the teachings and retreats, and what a toll it can take on your finances, work, family, and overall stability. This creates an unnecessary and obstacle-laden environment of inner conflict that paradoxically opposes your Path, often leaving you with the feeling that you’re at best making minimal progress and at worst destabilizing your life and slipping backwards.

Therefore, Dharma Bodhi and Sahaja Dākinī devised practitioner cohorts to help you create a stronger connection to the lineage masters, and to provide a rich source of continuous nourishment accessible from your own home. Trika Mahāsiddha Yoga’s goal is to provide you with an accessible, authoritative and affordable support system enabling you to attain stable Realization of your True Nature in this very lifetime, as promised by the Mahāsiddhas themselves and the traditions they founded.

To meet this goal we are very pleased to offer the Practitioner Cohorts as an opportunity to increase your knowledge, have access to ongoing individual guidance and to regularly receive the Blessing Waves of the Masters through gathering together for community practice.

We look forward to serving you on your Path.

The "Yoga of Relationship" is quite possibly the toughest of all the Dharma paths, but is also potentially the most rewarding. Most practitioners will find themselves in a relationship for the majority of their lives. Intimate love relationships create the best environment to see your limitations and to transform them. This cohort will take a deep dive into every aspect of spiritual relating - partner compatibility, communications, discovering sexual appetites, creating truly unshakeable intimacy, devotion and love, how to host each other's differences while cultivating a mutual practice path, supportive partner practices, crafting a functional relationship contract, handling disagreements, sexual "yogas," and more...

This practitioner cohort focuses on what is known as the "Progressive" Path of Meditation - a step-by-step meditation process that takes the practitioner from the starting point of relative ignorance of one's True Nature, all the way to Full Realization. This cohort gives you a regular class to support your continued progress in the Way of Meditation, which is called "Classical Mind Training" in Indian and Tibetan Tantra. By building on successive attainments in meditation you'll gain a clear sense of direction, accomplishment and security in the Path and your ability to attain the Ultimate Fruit of Realization. Dharma Bodhi will answer questions pertaining to the Practice and View of the Progressive Path of Meditation, give practice tips, share his experience of each stage of the path and teach new techniques not covered in the retreats and online courses.

This practitioner cohort will serve as the TMY community of practitioners interested in the path and methods of what is called "Direct Meditation." This cohort will study methods, principles, oral teachings and texts of Direct Meditation from the traditions of Śakta-Śaiva Dharma, Daoism and Bön. In the Way of Direct Meditation, the practitioner plunges into the "Fruit" or end-result of the Path as the method of meditation. In contrast with the Path of Progressive Meditation, Direct Meditation does not place importance on a gradual approach; rather the practitioner performs their daily practice invoking the perspective that they are revealing their innate Buddhahood, not creating it. The practitioner cultivates a continual, but passive approach to diminishing their "spiritual materialism" or "spiritual ambition," while nourishing patience, calm, acceptance and radical openess.

This cohort will also serve as the home for the Daoist Teachings & Practices of TMY. You can learn Daoist Direct Meditation (zuo wang), Daoist philosophy, oral teachings, text study, internal and external alchemical pratices (qi gong, jin dan/nei dan), Daoist hygiene practices, and elements of Zi Wei astrology. You will learn new techniques not covered in the online courses and in-person retreats.

Pre-requiste: Attendance at any online or in-person Daoist or Vajra meditation training.

The Way of Fire Practitioner Cohort provides essential ongoing support for the yogins cultivating realization via the practice of Kundalinī Hatha Yoga and/or Tibetan Yoga. The Way of Fire is a powerful path promising rapid results from its highly technical practices. This means the practitioner requires more contact with the Master on a continual basis. You will have many questions on the subtleties of cultivating the body's various energy systems. And you'll need timely answers to maximize your efforts in practice to prevent stagnation or potential injury. The practice of Yoga has many supportive teachings and these cannot be adequately covered during the limited time at retreats. There are many rare postures and pranayama mehtods with specific esoteric effects that will be covered in the cohort, along with relevant Sanskrit and Tibetan text study. Therefore, this cohort also serves a critical role in further education of the TMY Yogin.

Due to the technical nature of the topic, entry to this cohort is restricted to those who have attended the Way of Fire's Level 2 - Kundalinī Hatha Yoga Retreat (in Costa Rica) or an in-depth Adi-Yoga Retreat (in Thailand or the USA).

Pre-requiste: Attendance at a KHY - Level 2 Retreat.

After attending Tantrik Pūjā - Level I (online or in- person), Daśamahavidyas Retreat (in-person) or Rudi's Kriyā Yoga Retreat (in-person) you may join the ongoing Way of Water Practitioner Cohort. The Way of Water has three interrelated branches of study & practice - Pūjā (devotional ritual), Deity Yoga and Kriyā Yoga (working with the subtle channels and winds). One of the great things about this cohort is that it gives you a chance to talk about your subtle-energy experiences in Kriyā Yoga and Deity Yoga, helping you discern those experiences that are meaningful and should be worked with from those that are just a distraction if assigned meaning and followed. Kriyā Yoga is a combination path - mystical-devotional and highly technical. This combination makes ongoing guidance crucial, as the beginner and intermediate surf the many altered states of consciousness with weird and wonderful external manifestations of lights, sounds, sensations and visions that come with steady practice.

For Pūjā practitioners this cohort will give advice on - how to better construct your pūjās to meet the needs of the situation at hand, gain better pronunciation and rhythm of the Sanskrit mantras and liturgy, offer alternative mantras to subtly tweak the energy of pūjā, learn more about the shamanic roots of pūjā and how to implement them ala Balinese style Tantrik Pūjā, learn more about the advanced pūjās, and gain a deeper understanding of the path of Pūjā as a valid means to realize your True Nature.

For the practitioners of Deity Yoga there will be talks about deities and how to better connect to them through mantra, visualization, bhavanā and pūjā. New and different ways of practicing Deity Yoga will be shared, along with alternate deity mantras and their effects.

The body and its energies are recognized as the very foundation of our realization. Therefore, cultivating radiant health and longevity take a primary role in Trika Mahāsiddha Yoga. There are many spiritual paths that disregard the body and its cultivation. Not so with the Way of the Mahāsiddhas. The Vajra Body Cohort will share the latest scientific research and breakthroughs in nutrition and exercise contextualized within an over-arching wisdom view provided by the energy-medicine systems of Tantrik Ayurveda (Siddha Medicine) and Daoist Medicine.

This cohort will delve into topics such as - how to construct a constitution-based diet, herbal formulas and supplements for longevity and healing, exercise for longevity, the science of weight training for gaining strength, muscle size and cardio, maximizing the benefits of rest and yoga nidra, body composition, visceral fat, free-radicals and anti-oxidants, the role of breath practice and bandhas in longevity and disease prevention, the practice of calisthenics, the importance and practice of effective stretching, detoxifying your home environment and your diet, and more...
